Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) – “Racial and Ethnic-Specific Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Discussion Groups.” AFYA designed, planned, and conducted focus groups to provide CSAP with stakeholder advice on enhancing the cultural competence of SAMHSA-funded substance abuse prevention programs. The goal of the project was to develop a logic model for the development and delivery of culturally competent and proficient prevention services; to discuss current racial and ethnic-specific substance abuse prevention issues; and to assist CSAP in identifying experts to review and recommend appropriate performance measures. We recruited participants, selected facilitators, developed a facilitator guide, analyzed focus group data, and compiled an analytical report.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) – “Scientific, Technical, and Logistical Support Related to Knowledge Application and Science to Services Activities.” CSAT’s Knowledge Application Program (KAP) is a national initiative focused on providing culturally relevant information on best practices in substance abuse treatment to a wide range of recipients and evaluating which delivery mechanisms are most effective in ensuring that treatment information is subsequently adopted in the field. As one example of the many tasks we have performed on this project, AFYA plans and documents workgroup meetings convened by the Cultural Competency and Diversity Network (CCDN). The CCDN comprises several workgroups, each of which provides KAP with recommendations related to a specific population. This project requires a high degree of sensitivity to ensure that all services are offered in a culturally competent manner.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) – “Support for Strategic Planning Activities.” CSAP is working to align all of the Center’s activities, projects, and management approach with its mission and to plan its strategy for effecting change in the field of substance use prevention. AFYA provides strategic planning training to CSAP staff, analyzes qualitative data on Center processes, and makes recommendations on process changes that would support progress toward achieving Center goals. |
